Homebrew Summer: Time Moving Slow
Home Brew Mart teams with a longtime recreational fermentationist to conjure a Pilsner honoring the West Coast, Bavaria and Metallica

Not only does iconic Morena homebrew-supply outlet and nanobrewery Home Brew Mart help us out each year with our Homebrew Summer by transcribing every recipe into easy-to-use all-grain and extract templates for our readers…they also participate! This year, they selected homebrewer Paul Brown‘s recipe for a West Coast Pilsner hopped with a combination of European and American varietals…mostly the latter. Dubbed Time Moving Slow (like all of Brown’s beers, this one is a nod to a Metallica song), that beer will hit Home Brew Mart’s taps on Friday, August 28, but you can download and peruse the recipe for it right now!

This is one of over 20 beers we’re sharing recipes for as part of Homebrew Summer, so be sure to check back with us often. Or, if you prefer, you can sign up for our email newsletter, and we’ll send all of the recipes directly to your inbox. Cheers to homebrewing and another fun Homebrew Summer!

Beer is as simple as an accident and as complicated as your understanding of it. We chose to brew Paul’s West Coast Pilsner because it strikes a balance, bridging simplicity and complexity, and marrying a classic Old-World style with New-World flair! We love a crisp, clean Pilsner as much as we love dank and resinous hops. Time Moving Slow builds a classic Pilsner foundation, followed by the addition of a whirlpool hop cocktail as only the Best Coast can provide: Citra, Mosaic and Krush. We double down on these with a massive Cryo dry-hop. Bright and electric, Time Moving Slow invites you to ride the lightning, but at 5% ABV (alcohol-by-volume), you won’t fade to black.

Brewing at Homebrew Mart was awesome. The setup they have there is just like a scaled-up homebrew system, so it was easy to learn and help out during the brew day. One of my favorite parts of the day was learning about the history of Home Brew Mart. There are so many reminders, murals and things around the brewhouse that bring back its historical significance. I kept looking at the mural in the stock room, spotting names of people I’ve met throughout my brewing history. It was so cool. Homebrew Summer is great, and I wish more regional communities would adapt this type of program. It brings together current homebrewers with past homebrewers that have gone professional. The roots are all the same.
