Homebrew Summer: SISO
Harland Brewing's headman initiates an XPA-yielding do-over with an amateur he collaborated with during the inaugural Homebrew Summer

They say good things are worth waiting for, and we whole-heartedly agree. Especially when it comes to pro-am beers crafted by talented commercial and amateur brewers for our Homebrew Summer program. The last of this year’s collaborative creations didn’t even get brewed until last week…well into autumn. (I mean, it is called Homebrew Summer.) But no matter. We’re here for the beer Scripps Ranch-based Harland Brewing cooked up with one of this initiative’s frequent fermenters, homebrewer Eli Palma. Harland VP of brewing operations Cody Morris first teamed with Palma during the inaugural Homebrew Summer in 2021, when he was working at Embolden Beer Co. This time around, the duo brewed an extra pale ale (XPA) Palma has been perfecting over the past half-decade. Dubbed SISO, the beer will make its debut at all of Harland’s five San Diego locations later this month, but you can download homebrew-scaled recipes for it below.

Eli and I hit it off big time during our meeting five years ago. We laughed so hard throughout the entire day, but I don’t feel like we really did his recipe for a prickly-pear Kölsch justice. Our version was good but his was better, and I always wanted to brew with him again. I knew that when the opportunity to do another homebrew collab presented itself, he was my guy to call on. We have stayed in touch over the past five years, and Eli is just a top-notch dude. Aside from his beers always being some of the best homebrewed ales and lagers I’ve had, he’s absolutely hilarious, and the kind of guy you want to have a bunch of pints with and laugh at his stories. We bounced around a lot of different beer ideas before landing on an XPA that excited us all. We had a spot on the board for something like this, so I’m stoked to brew with him again and really hope we do his recipe the justice it deserves!

I was super stoked when the opportunity came up to brew with Cody and the Harland team! His schedule is packed, so I’m honored he carved out some time for us to collaborate again. It’s hard to believe it’s been about five years since we teamed up on my first Homebrew Summer batch! Beyond his undeniable skill, Cody is just a down-to-earth, authentic guy ‒ the kind of brewer you want to crush a pint with and divulge your crazy recipe ideas to without hesitation.
