Homebrew Summer: Ryeders of Rohan

We still have about a month of spring left before the sunny season officially arrives, but thanks to BattleMage Brewing, Homebrew Summer is already here! On Friday, May 29, that Vista bastion of beer, board games and all things fantastical will re-release a pro-am creation spawned during the 2024 edition of our annual program. Going by the name Ryeders of Rohan, it’s a rye IPA conceived by Andy Konopak, a homebrewer who went on to work at The Lost Abbey Brewing before moving to Colorado to pursue a career as an opera singer.

As with all of the beers produced through the Homebrew Summer program, we are including the recipe – in all-grain and extract format – so that you can download it and try reproducing it at home. It’s one of around 20 beers we’ll be sharing throughout the summer, so be sure to check back with us often. Ryeder’s of Rohan was a fun collaboration and the only rye beer we’ve brewed at BattleMage. We generally find rye to be a bit overpowering, but with the right hop combo you can get some great flavors to play with its spicy, earthy character. We hopped this rendition with Simcoe, Krush and Quantum Nectaron. The dank, piney, stone-fruit bomb blends well with the rye character and balanced bitterness of a West Coast IPA. We’ve had a lot of requests to bring this beer back, and I’m sure lots of our customers will be stoked to see it on the board. It’s also one of my favorite beer names and videos we’ve ever done. We took way more time than we should have to craft those cardboard helms. Come enjoy a pint!
