Disc Golf: Par for the Course

Examining a popular industry pastime via San Diego Beer Week's iconic Fling

Brewing industry professionals have a lot of things in common. Some are predictable, almost expected, like a taste for bold, next-level flavors or a passion for craftsmanship. Then there are shared interests that are less obvious…unless you frequent Morley Field’s disc-golf course. On any given day–before or after prime brew session timeframes–you’re bound to run into someone from the local brewing industry. From fermentation engineers to tasting room beer facilitators, disc golf is a much beloved pastime and, for many, a seriously competitive sport. San Diego Beer News correspondent Colby Chandler caught the bug decades ago and is such a big fan he’s built a course in his backyard and brings a portable basket with him when participating in collaboration sessions at others’ breweries. For his first solo contribution to SDBN, he takes viewers to the highest-profile disc-golf event of the year, a San Diego Beer Week mainstay called “The Fling” that’s taken place since 2009. Colby interviews the innovators behind that event, Chuck Silva (Silva Brewing, Green Flash Brewing) and Scot Blair (Hamilton’s Tavern, South Park Brewing), competitors from this year’s Fling and the innovator who constructed one of his favorite courses at Anderson Valley Brewing in Boonville, all in an effort to discover what makes disc golf such a unifying activity for members of the brewing community.
