Beer of the Week: Reclaim the Sea
Burgeon Beer Co. focuses IPA-fueled environmental efforts on coastal kelp forests
From the Beer Writer: In 2019, Burgeon Beer Co. teamed with the Natural Forest Foundation to craft a beer called Reclaim the Wild. For each can of that IPA that was sold, Burgeon planted a tree within a national forest, with the first 5,000 (of an eventual 25,000) helping to reforest land devastated by Northern California’s Camp Fire. Now, those Carlsbad-based do-gooders are at it again, this time applying their energies to replenishment of coastal kelp forests. Kelp is a powerful ally in our fight against climate change in that it draws carbon dioxide from the air and stores it in the earth. It does so at a rate that’s five-to-ten times higher than rainforests. Burgeon’s partner this time around is SeaTrees, which will plant an additional 2,000 square feet of giant kelp forests along California’s coastline as a result of this charity initiative. And all you have to do to help make that happen is drink this week’s featured beer, Reclaim the Sea. Pale-gold with a frothy head and flavors of guava and white peach, this extra-dry IPA makes for a great summer thirst-slaker. Get your first sip tomorrow, July 23, during an official release event at Burgeon’s Little Italy kitchen and tasting room, The Arbor. There will be limited-edition Reclaim the Sea merchandise, food specials and a raffle that will net the winner a surfboard shaped by Rob Machado, which has been graciously donated by Firewire Surfboards.
From the Brewer: “Reclaim the Sea is our tree-planting IPA collaboration with an awesome environmental organization called SeaTrees, where revenue from every pint sold goes to restoring California’s carbon-sequestering coastal kelp forests. Since this underwater reforestation project focuses on SoCal’s coastline, a West Coast IPA seemed like the perfect stylistic fit for our impactful collab. Citra, Strata and Chinook hops provide super-bright, punchy aromas and flavors with loads of tropical goodness, including ripe guava, sweet citrus and slight grapefruit notes. Moderate bitterness and a clean, simple malt bill lead the way to a balanced 6.5% (alcohol-by-volume) West Coast IPA.”—Anthony Tallman, Co-founder & Head Brewer, Burgeon Beer Co.
