Beer of the Week: NYJAH

In a foggy sea of local hazy IPAs, Black Plague Brewing's is skating along nicely

From the Beer Writer: Sometimes collaborations go beyond mashing, hopping, lautering and pitching, bringing together individuals with a great deal in common…even if they’re not brewers. Typically steeped with major respect, such pair-ups push the people involved to do their very best, go the extra mile in the name of their esteemed brew-deck guests. Such was the case with Jordan Hoffart and Nyjah Huston, a pair of well-known pro skateboarders who teamed to brew a Nelson- and Simcoe-hopped hazy IPA the former, who also so happens to be the head of Oceanside’s Black Plague Brewing, named after the latter. Or at least that’s how it tastes. This week’s featured beer, NYJAH, comes across as a quaff fortified with great care. There’s not one thing that’s subtle about it. Pronounced aromas of overripe mango, passionfruit, papaya and peach kick off the sensory experience, with similar flavors coming on strong on the palate, meeting and mingling with notes of orange and nectarine. It’s a liquid VIP fruit basket befitting a collaborator Hoffart and his brew crew clearly wanted to do right by. And Huston’s not the only one who appreciates this beer. It’s not around all the time, but when it’s available, people take notice and action, buying it up at a rapid clip.

From the Brewery: “Since its inception back in September of 2021, NYJAH Hazy IPA has quickly risen to the number-one spot in our beer portfolio. Exploding with rich tropical aromas of passionfruit, peach and gooseberry, and flavors of papaya and ripe apricot, with traces of melon and citrus, we knew we had something special to share with the craft-beer community. To see the impact it’s had on the craft consumer at a regional level has been quite extraordinary. We are stoked to release the third installment of limited-edition can-art created by Black Plague CEO Jarred Doss, featuring the intertwined “serpents”, a symbol of power and chaos from the underworld as well as as fertility, life, transformation and rebirth. In a saturated sea of hazy IPAs, we are overwhelmed by all the positive feedback we’ve been receiving about the beer. We continue to further our distribution reach and aim to have NYJAH available throughout the western US while also seeding new international market opportunities. #dyingforabeerJordan Hoffart, Co-founder, President & Distribution Manager, Back Plague Brewing
