Beer of the Week: Murky Machado
Bay City Brewing's hazy IPA pays homage to a Padres all-star...and New England
From the Beer Writer: In February of 2019, the San Diego Padres‘ signing of standout third-baseman Manny Machado (a former Dodger, no less) was huge news. Not only because it provided the Friars a reliable bat and Gold Glove coverage on the hot corner, but because Machado signed for a then-record $300 million over ten years. MLB All-Star or not, that’s a risky contract, but the creator of the much-imitated swag chain has not only turned in solid stats, but proven a clubhouse leader and motivator of young talent such as fellow All Stars Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Jake Cronenworth. While some of us were skeptic two years ago (I admit, I was one of them), Point Loma-based Bay City Brewing welcomed Manny with open arms, brewing up this week’s featured beer, Murky Machado. A hazy IPA bursting with flavors of passion fruit, pineapple and lemon zest, it’s big on tropical aroma and low in bitterness. The latter can be said for Machado, who exhibited a fiery temper and attitude that hurt his former teammates in his younger years. Since coming to San Diego, those liabilities have been a thing of the past. Maybe he just needed the right team. He certainly has the right beer!
From the Brewer: “Murky Machado is a super-drinkable summertime hazy IPA filled to the brim with Citra and Southern Passion hops. There’s some really great hops coming out of South Africa, but Southern Passion was one that really got us excited. The juicy peach and passion-fruit aromas it brings out blends perfectly with tropical citrus vibes from the Citra. We created this beer to welcome Machado to the team along with the opening of our East Village tasting room being right down the street from Petco Park. COVID was rough. We opened the tasting room a week before everything shut down. This beer didn’t get the appropriate home opener it deserved but now we can finally do that! Our rooftop tasting room and kitchen is now open Wednesday through Sunday. Even if you aren’t going to the game you can enjoy a Murky Machado on the rooftop while watching the game on our huge projector screen. This beer is only available during baseball season, so come down and get some while you still can!”—Austin Pinder, Head Brewer, Bay City Brewing
