Beer of the Week: Foo’s Gold
Plan 9 Alehouse's devotes a day and daily discounts to its everday, everyman lager
From the Beer Writer: One of the best things about beer, and a key to its longevity, is the fact it can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. Not only can people from any walk of life enjoy this every-person beverage sans pretention, but individuals with seemingly nothing in common can find a dual interest in the ale or lager in their glass, and in doing so bridge their differences. There’s something magical about that, and it’s something that Plan 9 Alehouse works to preserve with this week’s featured beer, Foo’s Gold. A simple, easy-drinking any-day lager, it was designed to be sipped, sloshed or slugged without an abundance of thought or connoisseurship. Owner Aaron Calles is so enamored with his golden-hued equalizer that he devotes an entire day to it each year. It’s called April Foo’s Day, and while it takes place on April 1, this special event featuring the beer on draft and in cans with specialty merch, is no joke. Nor is the progressive-keg deal the downtown Escondido brewpub is currently offering, selling pints of Foo’s Gold for $3 at 3 p.m., $4 at 4 p.m. and $5 at 5 p.m. No foo’in’!
From the Brewery: “Foo’s Gold is a primo lager brewed with the simplest of ingredients and the finest of techniques. Light, crisp and clean, this beer is enjoyable all year ’round, no matter the occasion. It’s the gold standard for foos of all kinds, no lames here.”—Chris Riley, Head Alchemist, Plan 9 Alehouse
