Beer of the Week: Clásico

After success with the style, AleSmith Brewing releases a new Mexican-style lager

From the Beer Writer: When I worked at AleSmith Brewing back in the mid 2000-teens, Mexican lagers weren’t part of the equation, but over the years the company has proven itself nimble, fun and innovative, embracing trends to brew up styles of the moment. This includes the previously humble Mexican-style lager. In 2017, AleSmith teamed with Sublime to craft a Mexican-inspired lager to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band’s iconic album, 40 oz. to Freedom. That private-label project was incredibly well received for its light body and crushability, and went far beyond celebratory-beer status, remaining a mainstay in the brewery’s portfolio for half-a-decade. But AleSmith isn’t finished with its South of the Border exploration. This week marked the release of the Miramar operation’s second take on the style: Clásico Mexican-style Lager. Brewed with traditional ingredients, take dos comes across slightly bolder than its predecessor, offering up more maize on the palate and a bitter finish that nicely contrasts with the beer’s inherent sweetness. It may not be named for a band, but as I can attest from some Pearl Jam pre-gaming earlier this week, it’s ideal for concert tailgating or any sunshine-soaked activities.

From the Brewer: “We’re excited to introduce Clásico, a new Mexican-style lager. This refreshing and sessionable brew is perfect for any occasion and will appeal to all types of beer-drinkers. Made with traditional German ingredients, Clásico has a light yet flavorful malt backbone with a touch of Noble hops in the aroma. The result is a bright, crisp lager that pairs well with seafood dishes, tacos and spicy flavors, and can now be found in our taproom and in stores. If you’re feeling ambitious, come by the brewery and try it as a Michelada!”Ryan Crisp, Head Brewer & Director of Brewery Operations, AleSmith Brewing
