Be a part of Homebrew Summer!
Homebrewers and breweries invited to join in third-annual pro-am brewing program
In preparation for San Diego Beer News’ third-annual Homebrew Summer program, we are inviting amateur brewers to send in recipes for their favorite homespun ales and lagers for the chance to have them produced by commercial breweries. As in years past, we will create a private bank containing all of the recipes we receive so that participating San Diego County breweries can peruse them and select which they would like to produce. Those breweries will then work directly with homebrewers to brew their beers, then tap them in their tasting rooms.
Homebrewers are allowed to submit up to four recipes for consideration from now through May 14, 2023. Simply send them via email to: [email protected]. By doing so, homebrewers agree to have their recipes published on the San Diego Beer News website if they are selected as part of the program.
If you are a brewery interested in creating a special experience for a local homebrewer through the Homebrew Summer program, please reach out to me via email. You may also participate by sharing a homebrew-scaled version of a recipe for one or several of your commercial beer recipes so that amateur brewers can give them a shot.”
Brandon Hernández, Executive Editor, San Diego Beer News
Over the past two years, 30 local breweries have worked with homebrewers to produce 33 beers spanning the stylistic gamut, from traditional to avant-garde. Those collaborations have included tapping events, and some of the beers have been canned for public release.
Additionally, 22 San Diego County breweries have allowed San Diego Beer News to publish recipes for 34 of their popular beers, sharing tips and techniques for producing them in a homebrew environment. Those recipes have been transcribed into a proven, standard format by Home Brew Mart veteran Derek Lauridsen, who will once again contribute his expertise to this program.
Adding extra meaning to the 2023 edition of Homebrew Summer is the fact it will overlap with the 45th annual Homebrew Con. Put on by the American Homebrewers Association, the largest annual homebrewing convention and competition in the U.S. will take place in San Diego at the Town & Country Resort from June 22 to 24.
Let’s show the country’s homebrew enthusiasts yet another facet of San Diego’s beer culture that’s a cut above all others: the camaraderie and collaboration between its pro and homebrewing communities. We enthusiastically invite local breweries and homebrewers to keep this fun, educational and inspiring tradition going strong!
