Fremont Cowiche Canyon | Wet-hop Pale Ale (6%): Depending on whom one asks, Cowiche Canyon may be the most anticipated release from Fremont Brewing’s incredible lineup of wet-hopped beers. A rare example of terroir in beer this West Coast IPA is brewed with fresh, unkilned hop cones derived from a single eponymous canyon in the Yakima Valley. Adding to the mystique is the sterling quality of the Simcoe and Citra hops used in the beer, all of which are grown organically. To my knowledge, this is the only wet-hopped beer packaged with all organic hops. Enjoy now, as these beers are inordinately fragile and fleeting.
Beachwood Pairs Well with Pizza | Italian-style Pilsner (5.3%): Long a powerhouse in downtown Long Beach, Beachwood Brewing has expanded dramatically of late. In addition to other projects that have come to fruition, the firm now boasts a pizza place in nearby Huntington Beach; the pizza dough is derived from a sourdough yeast culture from Beachwood’s sour- and wild-ale arm, the Blendery. I paid a visit myself this summer after a morning at Sunset Beach (not forgetting to stop at the new Green Cheek outpost there for cans to-go) and was delighted by both the pies and the beer. Who could ask for anything more? In celebration of the move into pizza-making, Beachwood developed a herbal dry-hopped Pilsner in the Italian style, with an all-too-fitting moniker. Avanti Beachwood!
Pizza Port Bacon & Eggs | Imperial Coffee Porter (8%): With the possible exception of AleSmith Brewing’s iconic Speedway Stout, no San Diego coffee beer inspires such devotion as Bacon & Eggs by Pizza Port. A sumptuous blend of roasted grains and smooth, earthy coffee, this beer only comes around in the autumn and winter. We would carry it on a year-round basis if it were possible, but as that doesn’t seem to be in the cards, stock up now!
