Olfactory Orange Sunshine | West Coast IPA (6.6%): Phil Emerson, a longtime brewer at Almanac Beer Co., has gone and started his own brewery! Together with business partners Bobby Moyer and Trevor Allen, he is making a go of it across the Bay from his former base of operations on Alameda island. Olfactory Brewing is situated in the Dogpatch neighborhood of my birth city of San Francisco and has had an auspicious beginning. Our first direct drop arrived just this week as Trevor made the drive south himself. Orange Sunshine is a West Coast IPA exploring all sides of Citra, with whole-cone, Cryo and Incognito additions. Cheers to Olfactory!

Wayfinder Freiheit | Festbier (5.7%): We have been utterly captivated by Wayfinder Beer’s lagers since they debuted in California a scant three years ago. This Portland, Oregon brewery does exceptional takes on a Helles and Czech-style Pilsner as part of their core lineup, so this autumnal lager was a no-brainer for inclusion in our inventory. Freiheit, which translates to “freedom” (a reference to the New Wave band Münchner Freiheit) is an Oktoberfest in the Wies’n style, with all of the delectable cooked-cereal malt presence one would expect. Prost!

Fieldwork Salted Watermelon Gose | Gose (4.8%): Having lived in Leipzig for some time, I am quick to trumpet the virtues of Gose, the beer style whose wellspring emanates from there. The tart, slightly saline wheat ale lends itself well to various fruit additions in the modern day, as well. Fieldwork Brewing ‒ which is located in Berkeley, where I grew up ‒ has cleverly twigged to the notion of dosing it with watermelon. This beer thus represents the inadvertent combination of my hometown and my home away from home, and is delicious to boot.
