Recipe: Throwback Brown

The Padres brought back the brown, and now, so is the team at Hodad's Brewing

As part of our second-annual Homebrew Summer program, various San Diego County breweries will be sharing recipes for some of their most popular beers, which have been scaled-down for amateur brewers to try their hands at from the comfort of home.

Next up on the professional-to-recreational info-sharing train is the recipe for Throwback Brown, an American brown ale that’s won awards and fanfare for Serra Mesa-based Hodad’s Brewing. Did this beer inspire the Padres to go from their drab blue-and-white unis to their more-stylish chocolate-gold threads? The jury’s still out on that one, but this recipe is definitely a good one worth giving a go!

Check back to San Diego Beer News throughout the summer for more recipes as well as release dates for beers developed by local homebrewers which will be brewed at local breweries and tapped in their tasting rooms. It’s going to be a great summer for homebrewers and beer fans alike, and we want you to be a part of it!

Throwback Brown is an American brown ale that was one of the first beers we brewed when we launched Hodad’s Brewing. Our award-winning brown has been well received throughout San Diego and continues to be a mainstay on our tap list. We decided to share our brown ale recipe as part of Homebrew Summer because it’s something a little different for our IPA-driven city, with a more complex grain bill than some other beer styles. Throwback Brown features a rich malt character that offers notes of chocolate, caramel, toasty malt sweetness and light hop-driven citrus. It’s a medium-bodied ale with deep brown coloration, ruby-red highlights and a dense tan head. We hope you enjoy brewing (and drinking) this beer as much as we do!”
