San Diego Beer News matching donations made to local non-profit this week

As part of our charity initiative, San Diego Beer News Gives Back, we have established online fundraisers for a quartet of local causes and non-profit organizations nominated by San Diego County breweries. This week, we are spotlighting the great work of the San Diego Humane Society.

From December 5-11, San Diego Beer News will match donations made to that non-profit via our GoFundMe fundraiser *, which was organized in collaboration with the San Diego Humane Society after they were nominated for their excellent work by Five Suits Brewing.

The SDHS is an open-admission shelter creating a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people. The organization has helped San Diego become the largest U.S. city to keep healthy and treatable shelter animals from being euthanized. With campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona, and San Diego, SDHS provides animal services for 14 cities within the county, not only caring for 40,000 animals annually, but also sharing expertise gained through innovative programs with shelters nationwide so they can save more lives in their communities.

“San Diego Humane Society’s scope of social responsibility goes beyond adopting animals. We offer programs that strengthen the human-animal bond, prevent cruelty and neglect, provide medical care, education the community and serves as a safety net for all pet families,” says SDHS Chief Operating Officer Jessica Des Lauriers. “While our influence is expanding nationally, our top priority is meeting the needs of San Diego. We provide exceptional care for all animals through world-class veterinary medicine, shelter and, most of all, love.”

From a veterinary-care perspective, SDHS performed 26,685 diagnostic procedures, spayed or neutered 13,034 animals, performed 452 dental procedures and 749 surgeries (including advanced procedures rarely seen in shelter environments) in a 12-month span from 2020 to 2021.

“These are unprecedented times for us, with more animals coming in then going out every single day,” says Des Lauriers. SDHS currently has 1,600 animals in care and more than 600 pets available for adoption. “Just like the rest of the world, we are experiencing staffing shortages and could really use the help of folks in the community who are willing to step up and help care for our deserving animals.”
