San Diego Legion rugby franchise teams with Ballast Point Brewing to create Legion Lager

When establishing a Major League Rugby (MLR) franchise in America’s Finest City in 2018, SD Legion CEO Ryan Patterson wanted to ensure his organization reflected its fans and environs. This season, that extends beyond the field courtesy of Legion Lager, a beer brewed for the team by Miramar-based Ballast Point Brewing.

“San Diego is the capital of craft beer, so it was important we have our very own beer that lived up to the hype,” says Patterson. With more than 160 breweries operating within San Diego County—many of them award winners—there was no shortage of local businesses to team with. In the end, it was two owners’ longstanding love of rugby that sealed the deal.

“I’m a huge fan of the sport. I grew up playing rugby in England, New Zealand and Hong Kong.,” says Ballast Point COO Chris Bradley. “We’re thrilled to support San Diego’s team by brewing a tribute beer to celebrate the upcoming season.”

Bradley’s affinity for rugby is shared by Ballast Point CEO Brendan Watters. Together they’re the founding duo of Kings and Convicts, a small Chicagoland brewery that shocked the world last year by purchasing Ballast Point from multinational conglomerate Constellation Brands. In doing so, they made fans of many San Diegans who were ecstatic to see the 24-year-old hometown original returned to independent status.

Patterson looks forward to winning over even more locals with Legion Lager, a crisp, refreshing lager made “American” with the addition of fragrant, flavorful, citrusy hops. Ballast Point selected a highly drinkable lager, knowing it’s the type of beer rugby players and fans worldwide traditionally enjoy.

Fans can’t currently root for the SD Legion at USD’s Torero Stadium. But like so many facets of life in the “new normal,” they may enjoy it from the comfort of home while cracking a cold one. Legion Lager is available at Ballast Point’s locations in Miramar, Little Italy and its original Home Brew Mart venue in Linda Vista.

“We’re proud to call Ballast Point our official craft beer partner. Much as they are regarded as one of the brewing industry’s pioneers, our team and the rest of the MLR are paving the way for professional rugby in the U.S.,” says Patterson. “I’m excited that our fans will have a delicious, refreshing American lager to enjoy this summer and into 2021, when we’re ready to watch rugby live with friends and family.”
