Burgeon Redwood Remedy | Amber Ale (6%): Our very own Burgeon Beer Co. out of Carlsbad is known for a packed release schedule, with new recipes and seasonal favorites populating our fridge doors on a near-weekly basis. Yet their Redwood Remedy stayed draft-only until earlier this year, when it took the gold medal at the World Beer Cup in Philadelphis in the Amber Ale category. A canning run was rushed into production and now this delightful beer is a recurring presence! Hopped with a trinity of Cascade, Chinook and Citra, this is reminiscent of an earlier time in craft beer, when bitterer beers could have some hue to them. Congratulations to Burgeon!
Ayinger Oktoberfest Märzen | Märzen (5.8%): I have had the distinct privilege of tasting scores of Märzens in my life and yet Ayinger Oktoberfest-Märzen remains my absolute favorite ‒ there is no beer that I more look forward to every year as autumn approaches. The family-owned brewery is located in the eponymous village of Aying, directly southeast of Munich. The beer itself has a coppery, goldenrod hue, with barley-malts, light caramel and a whiff of chestnuts appearing on the aroma. The bottom-fermenting lager yeast, as well as lagering process itself, make for an astonishingly bright finish, crisp and clean. Prost!
Firestone Walker XXIX | Barrel-aged Cuvée (12.3%): The years come and the years go, but nobody does blended barrel-aged beers better than Firestone Walker Brewing. The anniversary cuvées are intrinsically similar, being a blend of several diverse bourbon barrel-aged malt-driven ales, but each release has its own personal character. Some of the beers involved were created with the specific purpose of going into the final recipe and are not typically released as such! The 29th anniversary recipe consists of about one-third Parabola, a smattering of other old favorites, and a collaborative stout brewed with FrauGruber Brewing, a craft beer operation located northwest of Munich. Enjoy now or lay a bottle down to slumber for a few years?
