Beer of the Week: I Don’t Get Angry When My Mom Smokes Pot
What was once an over-the-top terpene-infused IPA has evolved into a repeat gold-medalist and shining stylistic example from Weir Beer Co.

Over the past six years, this outlet has put on an event that craft beer fans as well as the industry professionals they love and respect have come to enjoy in a big way: the San Diego Beer News Awards. I’ll be honest and say that the medals, plaques and trophies are somewhat secondary, as the primary reason for the event is getting the county’s amazing craft-beer community together in one place to appreciate one another, catch up and have an immensely fun time. That said, I’m always encouraged when I see truly standout beers voted into the top spots in their respective style categories. One category where voters have consistently gotten it right is Niche IPA, which presents an amorphous collection of session, cold, red, brown, black, fruited, milkshake, Belgian-style, English-style, East Coast-style, sour, terpene, chile, brut and Brett India pale ales. Being such a catchall, there’s never a shortage of nominated beers, but voters consistently select legitimately exceptional winners. Past gold medalists include Societe Brewing’s The Coachman (session IPA), Jacked Up Brewery’s Dragon Fruit IPA, GOAL. Brewing’s Ube Haze and this week’s featured beer, I Don’t Get Angry When My Mom Smokes Pot. A terpene-infused IPA from Weir Beer Co., it garnered gold both this year and last, as well it should. Owner and Head Brewer Hayden Weir has been one of the fastest to master this relatively new, fast-emerging beer style. When he and his wife first opened their Vista business, he admits IDGWMMSP (or “Mom Pot” as they refer to it) was overboard in the terpene department, rendering it overwhelmingly dank, to the point where picking up any of the hop nuances of the base beer was nearly impossible. That said, fans of hops’ dank green botanical cousins absolutely loved the beer. Still, Weir dialed back the terp’s, and as a result, Mom Pot is far more palatable and now just as easy to love for its beeriness as its Mary Jane aspects, which are still plenty present. Pop the top on a colorful can of the beer and you’ll be instantly aware, solely by its dank-bordering-on-outright-skunky scent, that this is a terpene-infused beer. But take a sip and you’ll be able to easily identify this as a balanced, vibrantly fruity IPA, one with citrus and tropical appeal, plus the backing of just enough malt to sturdy up this punchy creation. It’s a terpene IPA pushed just to the limit without going over, and absolute gold-medal material. Will it repeat at the 2027 San Diego Beer News Awards? Well, you’ll just have to come out next March and find out for yourself!
I Don’t Get Angry When My Mom Smokes Pot is our flagship West Coast IPA with hemp terpenes that has a name as large as its impact on the senses. This beer receives more reactions than any that I have ever brewed, and it is a delight to see each time. A dank weed aroma hits you hard in the nose and is strong enough to waft over to nearby friends. As strong as it smells, it doesn’t overwhelm the palate, and is surprisingly drinkable, finishing like a classic West Coast IPA. If you haven’t had it yet, you need to try it soon!”
