Craft beer has permeated every community in San Diego County, but arguably none so much as the city proper’s North Park neighborhood. Considered by many as the craft-beer capital of the Capital of Craft, it is densely populated by breweries and brewery-owned taprooms located along and just off the 30th Street thoroughfare. And in recent years, nearby South Park has welcomed a pair of satellite locations from high-profile local beer ops.
NORTH PARK
Barley & Sword Brewing – North Park
CRAFT by Brewery Igniter, 3052 El Cajon Blvd, Ste 102, San Diego, CA 92104
In 2023, when most breweries were fixated on IPAs and New World lagers, a group of U.S. Navy veterans installed their purely Old-World concept, Barley & Sword Brewing, in one of three lease-to-brew suites at North Park’s Brewery Igniter facility. From pub-like environs punched up with touches of the medieval, visitors can enjoy traditional ales and lagers from the U.K., Ireland, Belgium, Germany and Czech Republic. Having a beer portfolio that flies in the face of modern-day trends has helped the business differentiate itself in a crowded market, and grow to include a second, larger location in North County.
Belching Beaver Brewery – North Park

Before the satellite tasting room trend became ubiquitous throughout San Diego County, North County’s Belching Beaver Brewery blazed a trail with the model, expanding its reach by opening a spinoff location on North Park’s main drag. Thirteen years in, it remains a well-patronized spot serving up the company’s vast array of West Coast, hazy and terpene-infused IPAs (including a line produced in collaboration with the alt-rock band Deftones), fruit- and honey-infused beers, a wildly popular peanut butter milk stout and more.

Though Fall Brewing is based in one of Miramar’s largest production facilities, the company got its start in 2014 in a former automotive shop on a northerly portion of 30th Street. It’s from this meager, cinder-block building that a much-beloved beer operation took flight behind an ever-changing, always extensive selection of beers leaning heavy on hoppy ales and a variety of low-alcohol lagers. Other mainstays include its Plenty for All “California Pilsner”, the Jazz Hands family of fruited kettle-sours and a coffee-and-vanilla-infused stout dubbed 2AM Bike Ride.

Not long after debuting in 2013, the owners of Thorn Street Brewery took their business to the next level, getting into the distribution with a sister operation called Thorn Brewing. Based in Barrio Logan, that spinoff soared, before falling victim to the pandemic and a tough economy and being sold in 2025. What remains today is Little Bird Brewing, a business residing inside Thorn Street Brewery’s original homey location serving rebranded versions of that business’ beer lineup, which includes various IPAs, lagers, English and Belgian ales, as well as a line of hard seltzers.

Opened in 2010 as San Diego’s first “nanobrewery”, this small-sized operation made a big name for itself while educating entrepreneurs on methods for launching their own nanos. In 2013, Mike Hess Brewing significantly increased its brewing capabilities, opening this 3,000-square-foot production facility in the heart of North Park. Here, visitors take in a view of the brewery floor as they traverse a bridge en route to the tasting room, where the core-beer lineup includes IPAs as well as an American lager, Kölsch, amber ale and Freeflow hard seltzers.
Modern Times Beer – Flavordome

While Modern Times Beer once boasted one of the largest and most wide-ranging assortments of public venues of any brewing company on the West Coast, the last remaining piece of that empire is this tasting room in the southern section of North Park. Definitively retro in decor with a bar constructed of used VHS tapes and a ceiling tiled with vintage lampshades, it’s a cozy place to kick back and sample 20 taps’ worth of the company’s beers, including one-offs and experimental pilot batches. The company’s branded coffee is also available in bags to-go.

Founded in 2016 by one of the most award-winning homebrewers of all time, North Park Beer Co. pays homage to the community it’s named after with mid-century craftsman interiors featuring dark wood, brass and globe streetlamps. A busy hub among members of the local craft-beer community, its extensive tap list features the company’s vast array of rotating, critically acclaimed West Coast and hazy IPAs, and largely hoppy lagers, as well as beers from other noted local and out-of-town breweries. An in-house menu of worldly beer-friendly cuisine makes for a well-rounded, all-around tasty experience.

In 2019, the owner of a longstanding North Park bar installed a stylish brewpub across the street. Named after the neighborhood’s OG acreage, The Original 40 Brewing has been helmed by a number of talented brewers, and is currently the domain of the former head of Modern Times Beer’s vaunted barrel-aging program. As one would expect, the brewpub crafts top-notch barrel-aged beers, along with hop-forward ales and “crispy” lagers. Meanwhile, the seasonal food menu is made up of starters (goat cheese dip, poutine fries, charcuterie), salads, sandwiches, burgers, tacos and mains (steak frites, short rib pasta).

Though not as flashy as many of its North Park contemporaries, Poor House Brewing has maintained a solid presence and amassed an impressive collection of regulars during its 13 years on 30th Street. Founded by the entrepreneur behind early San Diego beer op Firehouse Brewing, this low-frills, straightforward spot serves an assortment of IPAs, plus Belgian, English and Irish-style beers. Designed as a casual neighborhood spot, it’s a kickback spot to drink like a regular even if you’re an out-of-towner.
Pure Project Brewing – North Park

In 2022, Vista-based Pure Project Brewing brought not just its beer, but also its eco-conscious persona and tropical-inspired design motif to North Park, installing an indoor-outdoor satellite tasting room with a large patio and plenty of furniture for al fresco lounging. As with all of Pure Project’s venues, the tap list here is lengthy and includes the company’s ever-rotating assortment of “murky” and clear IPAs, lagers, farmhouse ales, sours and stouts (a number of which are barrel-aged), along with house wines, ciders and hard seltzers.

A married couple which included a key member of Urban South Brewery’s production crew became so enamored with San Diego’s beer scene that in 2022 they relocated and opened their own brewery in one of the lease-to-brew suites at North Park’s Brewery Igniter campus. Today, Seek Beer Co. continues to make a name for itself behind weekly releases of Germanic and Czech-style lagers (including its popular Fortune Pilsner), IPAs (West Coast and hazy), kettle sours and numerous specialty beers, including numerous collaborations with breweries located in and around San Diego County.

In 2006, beer-loving brothers opened the venerable SD TapRoom. Fourteen years later, they went from slinging suds to making them at this North Park brewpub situated as the cornerstone of a residential highrise. Here, 50 taps dispense a diverse variety of house beers, ranging from sessionable Old World styles to West Coast (i.e., hoppy) ales and lagers, as well as occasional sours and stouts. The food menu is eclectic, with starters (ahi nachos, wings, beer mac & cheese), salads, burgers, “sandos” and taco plates, plus a dessert list highlighted by freshly baked skillet cookies.
SOUTH PARK
Fall Brewing – The Golden Rhino Room

All of Fall Brewing’s public spaces feature colorful concert posters illustrated by the company’s owner, a career graphic designer who has worked with countless musical acts and is responsible for all of the iconic brand’s can and bottle designs. At The Golden Rhino Room, visitors can take in that artwork – or a mounted, metallic-painted rhino noggin – from a brass-accented L-shaped bar or leather banquette, while sampling Fall’s lineup of hop-forward ales, world-inspired lagers and other creations, which regularly change and apply New World technique to Old World styles.

In 2021, Harland Brewing waded into the hospitality industry, taking over a former coffee shop and corner grocery in the heart of South Park. After revamping it to mirror its contemporary lounge aesthetic and installing a U-shaped bar, Harland reopened with a tap list flush with house beers of all ilks (leaning heavily on the hoppy side, while also taking on exotic smoothie and pastry fare), plus breakfast daily (avocado toast, sandwiches, burritos) giving way to an afternoon/evening menu featuring sandwiches, burgers, chicken tenders, tacos, barbecue and more.
