Homebrew Summer: Pils
A local homebrewer returns to the scene of many a brew day, Citizen Brewers, to work with its owner on a straightforward Czech-style beer
Judd McGhee has more than just a little experience working with amateur brewers (not to mention complete newcomers to the art of fermentation) to create special beers. As the owner and Head Brewer at Grantville brew-it-yourself establishment Citizen Brewers, it’s what he does day in and day out. So he figured why not add another such brew day to the calendar in honor of Homebrew Summer? Earlier this sunny season, he invited Paul Duddles, a local homebrewer he’s quite familiar with, over to his fermentation lab to craft, keg and can his recipe for a Czech-style Pilsner. Simply dubbed Pils, it will hit the taps at Citizen Brewers on Wednesday, September 16. Take a moment to review the recipe for the beer before heading to Grantville for a taste of the genuine article.

Joining forces with Paul for this year’s Homebrew Summer collab was a blast! We decided on one of his straightforward Pilsner recipes. We’re both big fans of Czech hops and Paul is a marksman when it comes to character-forward lower-alcohol beers. The European Pilsner malt and hops are well-refined and balanced. It was a delicate, but really fun beer to brew. We hope you enjoy our collaboration Pilsner.

There’s nothing like a cold, crisp “Saaz-y” Pils on a warm summer day, of which we’ve had plenty this summer. This beer is just straightforward Pilsner malt and Saaz hops for extreme drinkability. Brewing with Judd at Citizen Brewers was not a rare experience for me or for many people in town who have brewed a beer there. My homebrew club has brewed at Citizen many times and Judd is always ready to help as much or as little as you want. For this beer, it was a very collaborative process and it’s been fun to check on the progress as it’s fermented and lagered. I hope you can stop in at Citizen and enjoy a pint…or two!
