Homebrew Summer: Monk’s Delight

The opportunity to brew something rare for its tap list ‒ a Belgian-style monastic ale ‒ leads Fall Brewing to collab on a pro-am table beer

One of the opportunities provided to local brewing companies care of our annual Homebrew Summer program is the chance to brew the types of beers that aren’t on their everyday menus. Take, for example, Monk’s Delight, a Belgian-style table beer (AKA: singel) Fall Brewing Head Brewer Rob Tomao selected from this year’s list of 40-plus homebrew recipe submissions. That monastic-inspired number is the handiwork of amateur Guy Sardina, who spent a day with Fall’s crew in Miramar, and will return to the scene of that collaboration on Wednesday, August 19 to tap the beer as part of a co-meeting of two local homebrew clubs, QUAFF and the Society of Barley Engineers. Feel free to drop in then or after to taste this delightful pro-am beer, or download the recipe for it in all-grain or extract form and brew it yourself!

Selecting Monk’s Delight was a really fun choice for us because you don’t see Belgian ales come across our tap list very often. I appreciated Guy’s simple approach to the recipe…which we tend to have in general with our beers. Being straightforward and uncomplicated allows each ingredient to have its moment without overpowering the others. The esters play well with the phenols, which in turn balance well against the bready Belgian Pilsner base and flavorful, spicy Saaz hop additions. The recipe’s simplicity will make it very approachable for any homebrewer wanting to make an easy-drinking Belgian. There’s no need to overthink it!

Rob was great! He took the time to show and to explain to me his process on his system. He was very patient and informative. Monk’s Delight is an easy-to-make and easy-to-drink beer, great for summer with just a little more taste. I hope people enjoy it as much as I do!
