ISM Chepedelic | West Coast IPA (6.2%): Those paying attention to the Southern California beer scene knew the former Beachwood Brewing headquarters in downtown Long Beach would be in good hands when Ian McCall took over the space to open his own brewery, ISM Brewing. They were vindicated when Chepedelic ‒ a portmanteau of brewer Jose “Chepe” Perez and Superdelic hops ‒ won the gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival last year. Please believe me when I write that this is an incredible achievement, as the judges taste all submitted beers blind and the West Coast IPA category regularly attracts hundreds of contestants. Loaded with that New Zealand-origin varietal as well as Mosaic, this beer is redolent of blueberries, watermelon hard candy and ineffable dankness.
Japas Shibui | Kölsch (4.7%): The women of Cervejaria Japas have been written of in these virtual pages before ‒ Maira, Yumi and Fernanda are Brazilian, but all three are of Japanese heritage. Their beers are elegant and straightforward, often paying fealty to their background and self-identity. Not being a speaker of Japanese myself, I will cite their words: “Shibui is a Japanese word that expresses subtle, understated, and profound beauty that does not need to show off” ‒ which is also a suitable description of a well-brewed Kölsch. These light-bodied, top-fermented lagers, whose style originates in Cologne/Köln in western Germany, are a study in restraint and all too easy to drink. Please join us at Bottlecraft North Park for Kölsch weekend in a few days ‒ all Kölsches (both originals and homages) can be consumed without corkage fees, and the mighty Reissdorf will be found on draft!
Weldwerks Guava Lime Gose | Gose (4.5%): Twenty years ago this month, I moved to Leipzig in eastern Germany. I didn’t realize it at the time, but this beautiful university city is the wellspring of Gose, a cousin of the better-known Berliner weisse. Both styles contain wheat, are low in alcohol and are gently tart ‒ but Gose is altogether more unorthodox in its addition of coriander and salt. At the time it was often dismissed as a historical anachronism and an oddity among beers, destined to go extinct among the sea of Pilsner ‒ but the global craft beer movement a few short years later proved the naysayers wrong. The stroke of genius to introduce Gose to the general public was to add fruit, especially citrus! This offering from Weldwerks Brewing out of Colorado continues in this vein, with guava and lime accentuating the acidity and imparting a notably Margarita-esque impression.
