Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager

Bock Bar is a sibling to Bottlecraft, dedicated to Old World lagers and New World craft beers at once. The South Park establishment venerates its forebears on the site of what was once Hamilton’s Tavern (and Sparky’s even further back). Whenever a special event occurs there, featuring out-of-market or rare beers, Bottlecraft will often be able to join in on the bulk order! Following a recent Texas craft beer roundup at Bock, we are flush with delicious beers from the greater Austin area ‒ to wit:

Meanwhile Tender Robot | Hazy IPA (6.8%): Meanwhile Brewing is a juggernaut in Austin but hitherto unknown around these parts ‒ until now! With a lineup leaning on lagers and hoppy ales, alongside the occasional stout, there is invariably something for every beer-drinker on offer. The brewery’s headquarters is mind-bendingly vast, boasting playgrounds, a fleet of food trucks, a concert venue and even a soccer field (!). One of my regulars with family in Texas informed me that the space could accommodate several hundred or possibly over a thousand guests at a time. In any event, Tender Robot is a hazy IPA with Krush, Mosaic, Sabro and Taiheke ‒ the lattermost being a New Zealand varietal sometimes referred to as a “Super-Cascade”. This beer was just tapped at Bottlecraft North Park, so stop on by for a taste!

Jester King Petit Prince | Brett Table Beer (3%): Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s masterpiece The Little Prince is adored the world over as a children’s book ‒ albeit one tinged with melancholia. Depicting allegorical themes of planetary destruction, lost love and the transitory nature of the human condition, with iconic watercolor illustrations to match, it is a book with great meaning to generations of grown-ups who have not forgotten the arbitrary confusion of childhood. With their usual sumptuous artwork, Jester King Brewery’s recurring Petit Prince pays explicit homage to the story ‒ a dry, prickly lunchtime beer, elegant and refined. I don’t ordinarily recommend consuming an entire 750-milliliter bottle without help, but given its extraordinarily low ABV (alcohol-by-volume) this is a worthy exception!

Jester King Omniscience & Proselytism | Barrel-aged Sour Ale (5.1%): Jester King excels in mixed-fermentation beers aged up in oak with a veritable cornucopia of fruits. The sugars inherent within the additional ingredients are consumed by the wild yeast and bacteria, attenuating back down to dryness while imparting the characteristics of the fruit. Omniscience & Proselytism is only the latest such example to come our way encased in the delightful 500-milliliter “genie” bottles, replete with Texan-grown strawberries. I was greatly amused by the disclaimer on the label and will reprint it in its entirety: “The name Omniscience & Proselytism does not refer to any claims of inducing omniscience.” But wouldn’t that be something?
