From a quaint village area bordering the Pacific Ocean to inland expanses populated with a blend of residential, retail and industrial, Carlsbad has a lot to offer. That includes breweries, brewpubs and taprooms offering just about every type of beer imaginable, including plenty of crisp, easy-drinking styles well suited for the always-sunny North County municipality.
Arcana Brewing

Nearly every square-inch of Arcana Brewing’s walls are lined with breweriana and regulars’ designated drinking vessels. Since opening in 2013, this unique-unto-itself product of a fervent former amateur fermentationist has dared to live in lesser-explored territory. Yes, it has IPAs and lagers, but visitors may also choose from a smattering of English-style and Old World ales, as well flavorful hybrid beers, braggots, ciders and meads. Arcana dares to be different and appeals to craft fans who employ the same approach.
BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse – Carlsbad

The Carlsbad location of a Santa Ana restaurant chain dating back to 1978, BJ’s does not brew its beers in the county, but offers a wide variety of house ales and lagers along with a menu headlined by deep dish pizzas. Other edible offerings include shareable appetizers (wings, pot stickers, mozzarella sticks, nachos), soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and composed entrées, including fish and chips, jambalaya, salmon and ribs. For dessert, Pizookies (warm ice cream-topped chocolate chip cookies).
Burgeon Beer Co.

Since bursting onto San Diego’s suds scene in 2016, Burgeon Beer Co. has become one of the county’s most popular breweries. Fitting for a company whose motif is based around organic growth, Burgeon’s tasting room (as well as a private-event space known as “The Greenhouse”) features live-edge bar tops and furniture, vibrant flora and an indoor tree shading the front counter. Similarly green are the company’s support of ecologically-conscious groups and a never-ending line of clean, dry San Diego-style IPAs and hazies, which are supplemented by lagers, stouts and occasional U.K. styles, sours and seltzers.
Carlsbad Brewing

Carlsbad’s namesake beer operation is a sprawling brewpub established by the founders of a pair of since-shuttered ale houses who originally entered the industry via a defunct Mission Hills-based brand called Acoustic Ales Brewing Experiment. In addition to house lagers, IPAs and a blonde brewed with local strawberries, Carlsbad Brewing boasts an extensive guest-beer list that’s heavy on Belgian and sour ales. Meanwhile, the food menu includes beer-friendly starters (Belgian-style mussels, pretzel balls, loaded fries), salads, soups, sandwiches, pizzas and more.
Culver Beer Co. / Locally Toasted Delicatessen

A good thing got even better when the pair of high-school friends behind Culver Beer Co., a spot specializing in beers of the hoppy and Belgian ilk (plus hard seltzers), constructed their own on-site deli in 2019. Going by the name Locally Toasted Delicatessen, that meaty side-hustle pumps out a hearty array of hot and cold sandwiches, ranging from American and Italian classics to inventive fare like Smokey Java Joe (turkey, bacon and gouda with chipotle coffee aioli) and Julius (pepperoni, provolone and hot honey pizza sauce). Come thirsty…and hungry.
Docent Brewing – Carlsbad

Since opening in San Juan Capistrano in 2017, Docent Brewing has made a name for itself behind high-profile awards won at various brewing competitions. Its top medal-winners include an American pale ale and a coffee-infused oatmeal stout, both of which can be enjoyed from the company’s Carlsbad Village tasting room. Sited in what had been a dilapidated cottage, the venue conveys warm domestic vibes bolstered by a backyard outfitted with fire pits, cornhole and a detached kitchen dispensing casual eats with Mexican, Korean and American flair.
Karl Strauss Brewing – Carlsbad

It was 2011 when San Diego’s first significant post-Prohibition era brewery opened its third location in Carlsbad. Located between popular attractions Legoland and the Carlsbad Flower Fields, it’s a convenient spot to refuel from touring either behind a menu of shareable beer-friendly apps, salads, sandwiches and eclectic mains (blackened shrimp tacos, ginger salmon, Korean BBQ rice bowl, beer sausages) and Karl Strauss’ portfolio of IPAs and popular lower-alcohol offerings, including an Irish-style red ale, Kölsch and a cherry cola-inspired hard seltzer.
Pizza Port Brewing – Bressi Ranch

San Diego’s legendary brewpub chain, Pizza Port, took a big step forward in 2013, constructing a 37,000-square-foot production facility in Carlsbad’s Bressi Ranch retail development to increase its brewing capabilities and service distribution accounts beyond its home county. Equipped with a two-story brewpub sporting 40 taps, it’s a family-friendly spot to enjoy pizzas, wings, salads and Portzels (pretzels made from whole-grain beer dough) with an IPA-heavy assortment of beers brewed on-site as well as at the company’s five other Southern California brewpubs.
Pizza Port – Carlsbad Village

Before Pizza Port constructed its large headquarters at nearby Bressi Ranch, the center of its universe was in Carlsbad’s Village area. It’s from this brewpub that the majority of the company’s hundreds of award-winning beers have originated. While the location’s tap list skews heavily into hoppy territory, a wide variety of worldly styles are also brewed here (and at Pizza Port’s other locations), particularly ahead of the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup, which take place in fall and spring, respectively. Plan accordingly and pair them with Pizza Port’s “non-wimpy” pizzas.
Pure Project Brewing – Carlsbad Village

Respected for its brewing chops and a devotion to making the world a better place through the support of environmental causes and organizations, Pure Project Brewing started out as the first tenant at Miramar’s lease-to-brew Brewery Igniter facility in 2016. Four years later, it opened its third location, an indoor-outdoor taproom across the street from the Carlsbad Village Coaster Station. Here, patrons can order from a menu stocked with murky and West Coast IPAs, lagers, stouts, sour ales and spontaneous beers, some which were aged in barrels stored right inside the taproom.
Shoots Fish & Beer – Carlsbad
The Cottages on Roosevelt, 2956 Roosevelt Street, Unit 2, Carlsbad, CA 92008
In 2022, the head of a brewery-centric construction management firm teamed with standout chef Daivin White and pro surfer Cheyne Magnusson to launch a suds-and-seafood operation in the back of an Oceanside bar and bottle shop. A hit amongst locals behind creative daily food specials and a line of SoCal sun-friendly beers, the business soon opened a second location as one of the inaugural tenants of The Cottages on Roosevelt retail collective the following year. That bar and eatery serves up Shoots’ Japanese-style lager as well as beers from other craft brewing companies.
Tipping Pint Brewing – Carlsbad

In 2022, a former brewer from Pizza Port’s Solana Beach pub applied his accumulated knowhow to his own venture, opening Tipping Pint Brewing at Oceanside’s Hangar 76, where it shares space with its combo tenant and landlord Carruth Cellars. Two years later, him and his wife made space at their original business, Carlsbad Village’s second-story coffee-shop perch, Vinaka Cafe, to install taps serving up Tipping Pint’s array of IPAs, pales, lagers and rotating outliers such as a Dubai chocolate milk stout flavored with cacao nibs, pistachios and vanilla.
