Homebrew Summer: Getaway Day
Bay City Brewing's production staff invites homebrewers to "aim low" to craft a 3% ABV IPA that tops their list of favorite post-work shifters

Earlier this year, the crew at Point Loma-based Bay City Brewing took notice of a trend that’s slowly sweeping the nation: extremely low-alcohol IPAs built for all-day, any-day consumption. Wanting to get in on the ground floor, they went to work devising their own. It was an intensive process, but in the end Bay City released Getaway Day, a 3% (alcohol-by-volume) hop-bomb that’s less than half the strength of a typical IPA, without surrendering the body or boldness one expects or craves from that style. For this year’s Homebrew Summer, they wanted to share the know-how they acquired through their trials and provide homebrewers all they needed to experiment with this super-session style.

This is one of over 20 beers we’ll be sharing recipes for throughout the summer, so be sure to check back with us often. Or, if you prefer, you can sign up for our email newsletter, and we’ll send all of the recipes directly to your inbox. Cheers to homebrewing and another fun Homebrew Summer!

Head Brewer, Bay City Brewing
We thought Getaway Day would be a great recipe to share since it’s become a staff favorite for shift beers and weekend adventures. Also, it was one of the most challenging for us to develop! Small variances in fermentation specs, hopping rates, and water chemistry can make a big difference in the flavor and perception in a beer with such a low alcohol content. It was a fun beer to develop, so we wanted homebrewers to join us in “aiming low”.
