From the beginning, entrepreneurs Kyle Pool and Andy Sist endeavored to create a business offering a multi-faceted portfolio of adult beverages. Over its six years in operation, New Motion Beverages has become just that and, next to quality products, the company’s versatility has been its greatest asset, allowing it to survive after opening in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and weather some of the most challenging conditions in the history of the local craft-beer industry.
Opened in November 2020 in the Miramar space that previously housed 32 North Brewing, New Motion and its staff hit the ground running, rapidly releasing hard kombuchas, hard sparkling teas and exotic hard seltzers in tandem with ales and lagers from sister brand Embolden Beer Co. It was only a month after the company’s public debut that Pool and Sist signed on with Scout Distribution to get their beverages into retail establishments. Doing so helped earn New Motion early momentum, but things really ramped up once the company began collaborating with the owner of Matcha Cafe Maiko Escondido store, William Sutjiadi, to hold tasting room events celebrating Japanese culture.
That series of “Taste of Japan” affairs brought in massive foot traffic and inspired the creation of new beers, including a wildly popular IPA infused with ceremonial green tea. It also showed Pool, Sist and Sutjiadi that they were onto something. There was clearly a market for American beers infused with ingredients from the Far East. Sutjiadi became a partner in the company and in 2024, New Motion launched another spinoff brand called Shogun Brewing by Embolden, the beers of which are infused with flavorful adjuncts, such as ube, yuzu and hojicha tea. They have been a hit, not just locally but across the Pacific thanks to contracts forged with international distribution partners.
In part because of the success of the Shogun line, New Motion has been able to open satellite locations. In 2024, the company was part of the Rising Sun Collective installed in the North Park site that previously housed Sipz, and 2025 marked the opening of Ramen Station, a self-serve dining establishment connected to Matcha Cafe Maiko’s Kearny Mesa location featuring a bar serving Embolden Beverage Group (EBG) offerings. The former has shuttered, but it that hasn’t soured New Motion’s ownership on the idea of expansion. Earlier this week, the company signed on to take over a pair of vacant spaces within Vista’s four-year-old CoLab Public House beverage collective.
Coming in at 12,500 square feet, the two-story CoLab development features a food-court-esque layout where guests may select beverages from beverage-producer tenants. Its current tenants include Breakwater Brewing and Propaganda Wine Co. EBG will take up residence in neighboring slot previously occupied by 117° West Spirits and Barrel & Stave Brewing. The latter is the beermaking arm of a Fullerton-based craft-beer bar which vacated CoLab after three years last June. One of the spaces will serve beers from Embolden, while the other will be home to a new distilling offshoot going by the name The House of Shogun.
“We are going in with a beer-and-spirits focus, and will feature exciting collaborations between the brands,” says Sist. “Having the brands next to each other will allow us to create our little world of craft.”
The license-transfer application process is currently underway. According to CoLab management, The House of Shogun’s space could be open as soon as this week. There is no firm timetable for the debut of the shared Embolden-Shogun unit, but it looks as though that may take place sometime next month.
