A single-brewery spotlight this week featuring the inimitable Holy Mountain Brewery!
Holy Mountain Throne of Blood | Altbier (4.9%): Holy Mountain is to be found in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, and is quietly one of the finest breweries in the entire Pacific Northwest. Named after Alejandro Jodorowky’s freak-out magnum opus La Montaña Sagrada, this operation excels at every style of beer across the spectrum, while its iconography is replete with creeping disquiet. Throne of Blood is inspired by the hybrid lager/ales of Düsseldorf and is for those who love malty beers with a broad swath of caramel.
Holy Mountain / Fonta Flora Blood of the Ancients | Oak-fermented Saison on Nectarines (6%): The mixed-fermentation program at Holy Mountain is second to none, full stop. In conjunction with North Carolina stalwarts Fonta Flora Brewery, this multigrain saison was first fermented in stainless steel before being racked into oak barrels for further mingling with wild yeast, souring bacteria and nectarines from the Yakima Valley. Funky, oaky, tart and vibrantly alive ‒ who could ask for anything more?
Holy Mountain / Horus Pecking Crew | Bourbon Barrel-fermented Smallywine (3%): That ABV (alcohol-by-volume) listing above is not a typo! Alongside Kyle Harrop of Oceanside ‒ better known by his nom de bière Horus ‒ the crew at Holy Mountain have journeyed on a truly experimental direction in creating a tiny barleywine. Ordinarily a hulking malt bomb reaching into the double-digits, the barleywine has developed a niche fascination and devotion among a subset of craft beer drinkers. Now they can enjoy this one in multiples! It might be a small crowd, but is a world-class Pecking Crew!
