Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager
Dear readers: I am delighted to present a very special edition of the column this week, showcasing three of the five collaborative beers made to honor the 15th anniversary of the opening of Bottlecraft! I have been with the firm for twelve-and-a-half of those years ‒ it has been enormously meaningful to see locations open, the experience of forging relationships with breweries far and wide, meeting new colleagues and making new friends all throughout.
All three of these beers will be on draft at all locations of Bottlecraft as well as Bock Bar in South Park this coming Saturday, June 6, with cans available as well! We also will have two further draft-only collaborations on offer ‒ a West Coast pale ale with ISM Brewing entitled “15M” and a West Coast IPA with both Pizza Port and McIlhenney Brewing called “Downhill From Here”. Hope to see you at the festivities!
Harland Quinceañera | Mexican-style Lager (4.7%): Ten years ago, when Bottlecraft was gearing up for its fifth anniversary, we held a round of brainstorming for potential names. The collaborative beer being cooked up by Derek Gallanosa ‒ then at Abnormal Beer Co. in Rancho Bernardo ‒ was a hefty imperial stout inspired by café de olla, with cinnamon among the ingredients. My partner (now spouse) Taylor came up with the final name: Quinquennio, meaning “a period or term of five years” in Spanish. This set a precedent of sorts, with our tenth anniversary lager Jahrzehnt ‒ a Motueka Pilsner brewed at Enegren Brewing ‒ taking its name from the word “decade” in German.
With all of that in mind, the name for our fifteenth anniversary Mexican lager, brewed on our behalf by Harland Brewing, was all too self-evident! Quinceañera pays homage to the selfsame rite of passage, a step on the road to growing up. The beer was brewed with Weyermann Pilsner malt and hopped with Hallertau Mittelfrüh, but remains a gentle pale light lager.
Human People Quarter Til | West Coast Pilsner (5.5%): Since opening in Seattle a scant year ago, Human People Beer has become one of our favorite breweries emanating from the state of Washington. With deep roots in San Diego and access to the finest hops in the Pacific Northwest (and beyond), this brewery makes absolutely dynamite ales and lagers. Quarter Til is a hoppy Pilsner with Krush, Mosaic, Mosaic Cryo and Nectaron. Bridging the gap between lager lovers and hopheads (many of us count ourselves in both camps), this is a beer to drink for at least the next 15 minutes!
Ambitious Ales Pistachio Perk | Coffee Blonde Ale (5%): This one comes to us courtesy of our family at Bottlecraft Long Beach! Riffing on their very popular Central Perk ‒ a blonde ale suffused with coffee and vanilla ‒ the crew at Ambitious Ales have added a certain nuttiness to the mix. Single-origin coffee, vanilla from Madagascar and pistachio all serve to impart an impression of qezwan (i.e., pistachio coffee found throughout Kurdistan *). A big thanks to Ambitious as well as Ryan, Malcolm and the rest of the team in Long Beach for this one!
*If you care to taste the real thing, a short distance from where I type these words is Murî, a Kurdish café!
