Please come join us at Bottlecraft Little Italy this Saturday, May 9 for Sour Saturday! Multiple taps of rare and vintage sour beers will be available, alongside an eye-catching bottle list to be enjoyed on the premises or taken home for a special occasion. This event is always a tremendous amount of fun. We hope to see you there!
Drie Fonteinen Hommage 2020 | Fruited Lambic (6.3%): The world lost a giant of traditional lambic in 2022 when Armand Debelder succumbed to prostate cancer. Arguably the world’s most talented blender of traditional lambic at the time of his passing, Armand embodied Drie Fonteinen in the wake of his father Gaston’s own departure to the Elysian fields. With each intervening year since then, there are fewer and fewer bottles of Drie Fonteinen that he had a direct hand in creating. Thus we are delighted to offer a limited number of these bottles of Hommage from the year 2020. Packed to the brim with krieken (cherries) and frambozen (raspberries), these are some of the most fruit-dense beers in the 3F lineup, yet still elegantly dry and funky as befits its lineage. Op uw Gezondheid!
Lyons Peak Handgeplukte Kriek | Belgian-style Kriek (6.2%): Brewing a kriek ‒ spontaneously fermented ale aged in oak with whole cherries macerated in ‒ is one of the most difficult styles of beer to pull off. On top of that, the most prized subtype of cherries for traditional kriek is known as Schaerbeek, after the eponymous town northeast of Brussels. These are beloved for their inherent sourness yet are very finicky, difficult to grow even in Belgium, to say nothing of outside of the Low Countries! It is thus a tour de force that local brewer Chad Stevens successfully managed to raise an orchard in Jamul, and then made an incredible kriek utilizing the fruits of its harvest. The beer has been imbued with a Flemish title, meaning “Hand-picked cherry”, and won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup for the debut batch just two weeks ago. We have Batch One bottles on hand and can eagerly attest to their quality. Congratulations to Chad for an enormously impressive accomplishment. Can beer tourism to Jamul be close behind?
Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes √225 | Sour Saison (5%): We are all familiar with the sour ale traditions of Belgium and Germany, but how about Switzerland? Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes ‒ almost invariably abbreviated to BFM ‒ has singlehandedly put the Alpine nation on the map for acid-driven beers. Better known for Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien, something like an imperial Flemish red, this operation in the tiny township of Saignelégier in Francophone Suisse exports its creations only sporadically, so it is always very exciting when one reaches our shores. √225 (typically spoken out loud as “Square Root 225”) is a rustic saison that is split into two portions, one of which is thereafter aged in used wine casks with wild yeast and souring bacteria, then remarried with itself. The result is dry, fruity, funky and altogether refreshing. À votre santé!
