ISM Anomalism Nelson | West Coast IPA (6.6%): Since opening a scant two years ago, ISM Brewing in downtown Long Beach has displayed impressive mastery of the West Coast IPA. While most of their beers within this beloved style focus upon blended and layered hops of all stripes, their Anomalism series showcases individual varietals. This latest release spotlights the most famous one from New Zealand: Nelson Sauvin. Redolent with notes of white grape, gooseberry and a touch of diesel (in a good way!), this beer is no anomaly.

Russian River 110 Pilsner | West Coast Pilsner (5.2%): A new beer from the immortal Russian River Brewing doesn’t materialize around these parts every day! 110 Pilsner is a low-ABV (alcohol-by-volume) lager generously hopped with Nectaron, Tangier and a tantalizing new varietal from the Antipodes known only as NZH-106. This lattermost alphanumerically coded one is descended directly from Riwaka and shares many of its attributes: tropical fruits, maracuyás and citric tones. The title of this Pilsner refers to the length of the Russian River in miles from Mendocino County out to the ocean. Stay tuned as kegs of this hoppy lager are expected in February alongside a great many other Russian River beers!

Enegren Maple Baltic Porter | Baltic Porter (9.1%): The delight of a Baltic porter is that it offers roast without concomitant bitterness, as befitting its lager character. Like its little sibling schwarzbier, it is also a cunning way to demonstrate that “dark” and “heavy” are not necessarily synonymous in beer. Enegren Brewing has introduced a further innovation to this regal style by adding maple syrup, not as a sweetener, but rather as a source of carbonating sugar. With a whiff of smoke to top it all off, this is one winter seasonal not to be missed, and it’s currently on draft at Bottlecraft North Park!
