Riip Neltra | West Coast IPA (7%): Some beers just name themselves. This latest interstellar offering from Riip Beer Co. out of Huntington Beach is loaded with Nelson and Citra hops ‒ the title of the beer is a neologism portmanteau of those two varietals, simple as that! White grapes, gentle pine and some orange peel are to be expected from this one.
ISM Hamburghini | Italian-style Pilsner (4.9%): I, for one, welcome our new Italian Pilsner overlords. Now a recognized part of the lager landscape, these dry-hopped Pilsners (typically brewed with Bavarian-grown Noble hops or their descendants) have captured the palates of drinkers all throughout Southern California. A cheerful high-carbonation pale lager with floral and citric aromatics from the Saphir and Sterling hops leads to an altogether crisp finish. Cin-cin!
AleSmith Barrel-Aged Speedway Stout Hammerhead Edition | Barrel-aged Coffee Imperial Stout (13.5%): A number of years ago, I stepped off the daily San Diego-to-London flight, exhausted and already feeling the early stages of jet lag. My transfer to the continent was some hours away, and I knew that a strong coffee would hasten the adjustment to the new time-zone (as well as stave off the lack-of-caffeine headaches). Summoning up a handful of antiquated pounds sterling coins, I blearily asked the young Kazakh woman behind the counter at the bustling Heathrow café for a “hammerhead”, to which she quite rightly stared back at me blankly. I guess our provincial terminology had not yet made the jump across the pond! After clarifying that I wanted a long black coffee with a shot of espresso thrown in, order was restored to the world. This barrel-aged edition of Speedway Stout is similarly loaded up with espresso alongside the usual coffee, and may alter your sense of time even if you are not in transit!
