Gene Fielden | Bottlecraft North Park Manager
A very special all-fresh-hopped edition of the picks this week!
Fremont Field to Ferment | Fresh-hop Pale Ale (6.1%): Even within the rarefied category of fresh-hopped beers, Fremont Brewing stands out. Their deservedly laudatory “Field to Ferment” series serves to kick-start the autumn every year, with a judicious 6.1% pale ale base upon which the fresh green hop-cones are allowed to express themselves. The only edition of this perennial favorite this year is the recurring blend of Centennial and Simcoe. Drink now ‒ it won’t get any fresher!
pFriem Fresh Hop Hazy IPA | Fresh-hop Hazy IPA (6.8%): If you ask me, pFriem Family Brewers may have missed a trick by not naming this beer “pFresh Hop Hazy IPA”, but I am merely a beer retailer and weekly columnist! Wet-hopping is known synonymously as fresh-hopping by our Pacific Northwest neighbors, and since they generously grow most of the hops in this country, we will gracefully defer. More of an unfiltered IPA than an opaque hazy one, this bright offering is a gift from Hood River, Oregon. A rogue’s gallery of varietals ‒ Citra, Mosaic and Eclipse from Yakima Valley, plus fresh iterations of Amarillo and Centennial ‒ makes for a tropical medley and oh so texturally appealing IPA.
Living Haus / Burial Fresh Hop Colin | Fresh-hop West Coast IPA (6.5%): The wizards at Living Haus Beer Co. in Portland, Oregon only send beer in our direction a handful of times annually, while Burial Beer Co. out of Asheville, North Carolina is all but unseen around these parts. What a treat then to receive a collab between the two wildly talented breweries, and a fresh-hopped IPA at that! Drawing upon the Strata varietal ‒ which increasingly serves as the vanguard of the harvest season of late ‒ this beer boasts berry tones and judicious bitterness from the dash of Chinook added in for good measure. All too endearingly, this beer is named after Colin Lenfesty, owner and head brewer at Holy Mountain Brewing, one of the finest breweries in Seattle and arguably the whole world. Cheers to lifelong friendships!
