This week’s theme is Cinco de Mayo…
Insurgente La Lupulosa | West Coast IPA (7%): At the vanguard of the exciting craft beer movement in Tjiuana is Cervecería Insurgente, whose talented brewers explicitly link their home city with that of San Diego. La Lupulosa (“The Hoppy One”) is Insurgente’s flagship West Coast IPA, replete with no fewer than five piney and citrusy varietals, and a sturdy malt basis. Though the Juan Cordero pale ale and Baja Orange Wit (formerly known as Tiniebla = “Darkness”) have maintained their popularity after all these years, La Lupulosa remains the best-selling of Insurgente’s lineup at Bottlecraft. Cheers!
Enegren Mexikanisch | Corn Lager (4.8%): Inspired by the origins of modern-day brewing in Mexico ‒ itself heavily influenced by German immigrants to the country in the 19th century ‒ Enegren Brewing has built a corn lager with characteristic attention to detail. With Pilsner malt from Germany, hops from the Hallertau in Bavaria and flaked corn, this is an elegant light-bodied lager. It is very pale in color, owing in part to the maize indigenous to this hemisphere, and has a gentle bitterness on the finish. Prost!
Loba Paraiso | Gose (4.5%): ¿Una gose de Guadalajara? ¡Por su puesto! Cerveza Loba hails from the Jaliscan capital and has successfully melded the eastern German beer style with guava. The redolent fruit proves to be an ideal match for the tart and lightly salty wheat-based beer. Inordinately refreshing and low in ABV (alcohol-by-volume), this is a brunch beer if ever there was one. ¡Salud!
