Ghost Town / Riip Incidental Mortality | West Coast IPA (7.1%): Any trip to the Bay Area with craft beer in mind would be remiss to omit Oakland. The Town has quietly developed an incredible lineup of breweries and tasting rooms in recent years. Better yet, some of them are sending their creations in our direction as well! Ghost Town Brewing makes absolutely stunning West Coast IPAs, and this collaborative release with Riip Beer Co. out of Huntington Beach is no exception. With hefty amounts of Columbus, Idaho 7, Mosaic and Nectaron in the mix, expect aromas of pineapple, bergamot oranges and fir, with bracingly dry bitterness. Enjoy while listening to the immortal track Ghost Town by The Specials!

Lowercase Nefiltrované Pivo | Czech Pale Lager (4.3%): As if one new lager from Lowercase Brewing were not enough, we were graced with two at at a time! A fascinating study in contrasts with the selfsame brewery’s Purity Law Pils profiled in last week’s column, Nefiltrované Pivo provides a bready malt palate with herbal snappiness. The name translates quite simply to “unfiltered beer” and is an incredibly well-integrated lager. This Seattle operation has proven more than adept at channeling the exacting brewing traditions of Germany and the Czech lands. My hat is off to them. Na Zdraví!

Fremont Coconut & Coffee | Barrel-aged Cuvée (11%): Fremont Brewing (in the eponymous neighborhood of Seattle) is justifiably lauded for its barrel-aged program, second to none on the West Coast. Seemingly one of the last breweries to produce huge oak-aged malt-driven beers in 22-ounce bombers, Fremont consistently lives up to the steeper price-tag that said stouts and barleywines can fetch. These are special occasion beers for sharing and pondering. This preamble leads us into an altogether novel set of releases of late ‒ barrel-aged blends (i.e. cuvées). Coconut & Coffee contains both of those ingredients of course, but they are steeped into a mix of unaged stout and bourbon barrel-aged stout. The resulting brew is younger, vibrant and under six bucks for a 16-ounce can ‒ who could ask for anything more?
