Wren House Spellbinder | Hazy IPA (7%): As the name implies, Wren House’s flagship hazy IPA is indeed transfixing. 3D-style multichromatic blurred text against a white background captivates the eye, while the contents of the can perform a similar act for the senses of smell and taste. This beer stunned the world outside of Arizona when it took gold at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival, but San Diegans who spend time in that state were already well-informed. Exploring the familiar interplay of Mosaic and Citra in the dry-hop, but with a clever Cascade curveball in the whirlpool, this beer only appears in town every now and then, so take advantage of the fact it’s here now.

Heater Allen Lenzbock | Maibock (6.2%): As the spring-lager season draws to a close, enjoy one last Maibock. Showing fidelity to both ingredients and process, Heater Allen brews this lenzbock (“spring bock”) with Vienna and Pilsner malts, resulting in a ruddy goldenrod hue. Floral sweetness on the nose gives way to a splash of grainy, herbal bitterness. Prost!

Fremont Brew 7000 | Barrel-aged English-style Barleywine (13.9%): To commemorate every thousandth brew, Fremont Brewing does a limited release of a very special barrel-aged barleywine. Leaning English in style rather than American (think J.W. Lees Harvest Ale rather than Sierra Nevada Bigfoot), each of these releases in the “Brew x000” series is an unapologetic malt bomb, with raisin and sticky toffee tones. Sixteen months in used bourbon barrels imparts layers of vanillin and oak to tie it all together. Cheers to Fremont for 7,000 successful brew days. We look forward to many more!
