ISM 1SM | West Coast Double IPA (8.6%): Few breweries have debuted in Southern California in recent memory with as much momentum as ISM. Ian McCall was already well-known in Long Beach and Huntington Beach for his work at Beachwood Brewing and Riip Beer Co. (respectively), cooking up stellar West Coast IPAs for the coastal communities. Marking a full year in operation at the original Beachwood location in downtown Long Beach, this self-referential beer is the Platonic ideal of a West Coast Double IPA. Loaded with Citra, Mosaic, Nelson Cryo, Riwaka Cryo and Simcoe, it is an unabashed celebration of hops in all forms. Cheers to Ian and his crew!

Mahrs Bräu Ungespundet | Kellerbier (5.2%): Unlike professional sports teams, breweries do not tend to move cities (let alone continents) very frequently. It was thus all too noteworthy when Mahrs Bräu relocated from its Franconian hometown of Bamberg to Los Angeles not long ago. Maintaining its longtime focus upon lagers brewed to the specifications of the Reinheitsgebot, the new incarnation of Mahrs has debuted in our market with core “U” – as in “Ungespundet”, i.e. unfiltered. This bready Kellerbier has healthy carbonation and the appetizing quality of fresh-baked bread. Prost!

Scaldis Noël | Belgian Christmas Ale (12%): It is that time of the year when our shelves are bedecked with holiday ales from Belgium. These delightful winter seasonals invariably marry expressive yeast with dark candi sugar (a non-malt source), resulting in enormous ABV (alcohol-by-volume) quotients. Brasserie Dubuisson has one of the most iconic examples of this family of beers with Scaldis Noël, boasting caramelized malt along with all the other elements. Huge aromas of sugarplums, figs and dates leap out of the glass, followed by a warming sensation in the drinker’s chest upon the first sip. Vrolijk Kerstfeest / Joyeaux Noël!
