Beer of the Week: Fan Fare

Viewpoint Brewing's classic-yet-modern West Coast IPA is built for hop enthusiasts

From the Beer Writer: When most beer aficionados think of classic West Coast IPAs, lupulin-rich “C hops” come to mind. And with good reason. Bitter, piney-tasting Cascade, Chinook, Columbus and Centennial hops formed the backbone of decades’ worth of this industry-altering style from the nineties through the early two-thousands. In spite of changing tastes, some of those have held on while others have flirted with resurgence. But there’s another hop that comes in way lower on alphabetical lists and delivers a forestry yet far more nuanced array of flavors. That workhorse is Simcoe. Known for woodsiness, oranginess and a “catty” quality most politely likened to black currant, Simcoe has a lot going for it, which is one of the reasons it has endured while other hops have fallen off. In my opinion, it’s the old-school American hop that most easily marries with modern varietals prized for their bright citrus, stone fruit, tropical fruit and berry qualities. Proof of that theory is provided in this week’s featured beer, Fan Fare. A staple of Del Mar brewpub, Viewpoint Brewing, Fan Fare is an homage to classic West Coast IPAs, offering plenty of evergreen notes and a sturdy bitterness, while presenting the aromas and flavors care of New School hops, Citra and Mosaic. These money varietals lend added depth, but without Simcoe this would be a completely different IPA. A bouquet of peach, passionfruit, thistle and pine transitions to navel orange, dried mango, dark berry flavors akin to Cabernet Sauvignon, grassiness and, yep, a touch of cattiness, all giving way to a tacky resinous finish that stays with you. IPA-lovers from multiple generations will be able to appreciate this West Coaster.

From the Brewer: “Introducing our West Coast IPA, a hop-forward delight bursting with vibrant flavors. Brewed with a harmonious blend of Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops, this beer is a true celebration of hop goodness. Get ready to experience a symphony of tastes and aromas. With each sip, you’ll be greeted by the refreshing notes of pine and resin, taking you on a sensory journey through the lush forests of the West Coast. The bright and zesty essence of fresh citrus adds a delightful tang that balances the hop bitterness. To create this exceptional brew, we carefully selected Skagit Valley Malts, known for their exceptional quality and flavor profile. These malts provide a solid backbone to the beer, enhancing its body and lending a subtle sweetness that complements the hoppy characteristics. Whether you’re a dedicated IPA enthusiast or simply seeking a bold and refreshing beer experience, our West Coast IPA is sure to satisfy your taste buds. Enjoy it on its own or pair it with spicy foods, grilled meats, or robust cheeses for a truly memorable culinary adventure.”—Moe Katomski, Head Brewer, Viewpoint Brewing
