Crooked Stave / Lawson’s Finest Liquids Lupulin Gumbo | Hazy IPA(7%): The trio of breweries that arguably elevated Vermont to must-visit status for craft beer aficionados were The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead and Lawson’s Finest Liquids. And while we nowadays receive shipments of Heady Topper and Focal Banger twice annually around here, the other two still require a sojourn to the northeast. Hence, it is a delight to see Lawson’s name emblazoned on the can for this beer, which was brewed at Crooked Stave in Colorado! Lupulin Gumbo is a real juicy fruit of a beer, with obscure new-wave varietals HBC 630, Talus and Vista all stirred together.

Enegren Festbier | Festbier (6%): Likely the final Munich-style seasonal lager we are to receive this autumn, this festbier distinguishes itself from Enegren Brewing’s Oktoberfest in a few key ways. That initial release (profiled in these virtual pages all the way back in late August) is a classic Märzen, with a ruddier amber hue and a lower ABV (alcohol by volume) at 5.5%. This iteration hews closer to the “Wies’n” style of lager, paler in color and sturdier in body, which have become more popular at the big event in the Bavarian capital We have a few cans left of the age-old type, so pick up one of each and compare for yourself? Prost!

Moonlight Boney Fingers | Black Lager (6.7%): The incomparable Moonlight Brewing out of Santa Rosa made a name for itself with Death & Taxes, a showstopper of a black lager. Only available on draft for the first quarter-century of the brewery’s existence, I have many fond memories of drinking it at the original Toronado in San Francisco and the now-shuttered Beer Revolution in Oakland’s Jack London Square. Adeptly demonstrating that “dark” and “heavy” are not synonymous in beer, Death & Taxes famously references the only sure things in life. Just in time for Halloween is a heftier version, with all the roast and malt structure that one could demand.
