This week’s theme is low-ABV (alcohol-by-volume) beers:
Beachwood Patio Project | West Coast IPA (6.1%): The inimitable Beachwood Brewing tends to produce flawless West Coast IPAs that fall right at the 7.1% mark. This new recipe thus represents a bit of a departure in that it is a full percentage point below. This does not detract in the slightest, mind you! Clearly designed with the aim of sitting on the patio and watching the world go by, the ineffable combination of Citra and Mosaic will surely make your cares and worries seem very far away.
Enegren Oktoberfest | Märzen (5.5%): It is late August at press time, which must mean that the Oktoberfest beers are landing! A stunning copper-toned amber lager incorporating Vienna malt alongside the more familiar Pilsner and Munich malts, this expression runs a bit low on the ABV for style but is none the worse for wear on account of it. Ideal for drinking in liters while seated at a shaded picnic table. Prost!
Russian River / Brooklyn Fonio | Belgian-style Blonde Ale (5.65%): Fonio is a “super grain” cultivated widely in Francophone west Africa, especially the Republic of Guinea. It needs neither insecticides nor fertilizers and only a small measure of water, making it one of the more exciting crops in the quest to feed the world without simultaneously starving it of every last resource. However, your first encounter with it may be in the form of this beer! The brainchild of Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery, this collaborative ale with Russian River Brewing includes said millet in a Belgian-style blonde, with all the estery goodness one might expect from such telltale yeast.
